Keep healthy and fit
46Healthy body, healthy mind
I've managed to reach the ripe old age of 60 yrs and continue to keep myself well maintained and lubricated!
I had a little problem with my knees and actually stopped running for about 10 years. In June, 2005, I had both knees operated on and chose to have an epidural anesthetic so that I could watch the 3 hour procedure!! Fascinating! The surgeon carried out lateral release of the outside ligaments, to help release the pressure of the kneecap pressing on the joint. Where the bone was exposed on the underside of the kneecap and the joint he drilled tiny holes to cause bleeding which congealed and scabbed over. This apparently promotes a good basis for cartilage to regrow. A good cleanup and stitchup and I was finished. Only 6 weeks of boring physio, fluid removal and lubricant injections to go!!
It took me 18 months to figure out how and what exercises to do to improve the stability of my knees and build the muscle groups around them. I am now able to road run after 10 years with no pain woo hoo!!
I've entered a 15km race on the 17th May, and have already started training. I'll let you know how I'm progressing.
Watch this space for tips on my diet and training methods.
